Ian J. Colton, Ph.D.
Dr. Colton is a registered Canadian Patent Agent with over 14 years of experience and practises in the area of patent prosecution with an emphasis on originating patent drafting in chemistry, biochemistry and broadly related fields. Dr. Colton is also registered as a U.S. Patent Agent for Canadian Applicants. Dr. Colton previously worked for the national Canadian law firm Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP for 12 years.
Dr. Colton received his Ph.D. degree in chemistry from McGill University. Dr. Colton also obtained an M.Sc. degree in chemistry and a B.Sc. degree in biochemistry from McGill University, and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University.
His doctoral studies focused on the development of a chemical model for p-type ATPases, and on examining the enantioselectivity of Candida rugosa lipase towards esters of chiral carboxylic acid esters. The nature of the research performed for his M.Sc. degree involved developing a method for the diastereoselective synthesis of 4-methyl prolines based on intramolecular radical cyclizations of chiral substrates. In his postdoctoral work at Harvard University, Dr. Colton studied electrostatic interactions in biological systems using capillary electrophoresis.
Dr. Colton’s scientific work has been published in many respected scientific journals including the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Analytical Chemistry and the Journal of Organic Chemistry.
